Product Description
Decades of the 20th Century. Photographs from the Getty collection. Fascinating photographs put images of the power of an event or the zaniness of new trends right before the viewers' eyes. The force of war and political conflict is just as important a theme as world-shaking innovations in science and technology. These are accompanied by portraits of great personalities in art, politics, and society.

5 out of 5 stars PHOTOS OF THE DECADE   October 2, 1999

This book, and the others in the series--1920s through the 1970s--are remarkable for their vast array of photos depicting just about every aspect of each decade. They are MORE than worth the price! The photos are accompanied by descriptions and these "little" books are BIGGER than you think when you start them!

5 out of 5 stars The fifties are represented in an absolutely splendid series   October 7, 2009
Robert Moore (Chicago, IL USA)
About six or seven years ago I got five volumes in this series. For some reason the other five books were not at that time available. All ten volumes have since been re-released and the entire series is available again. Together, the ten volume present an extraordinary visual record of the twentieth century. One of the reviewers for this volume has incorrectly stated that this volume deals with England. It is true that England is one of the countries represented, but the books are not restricted to any one country. The books were assembled in England, but the photos show life in countries across the planet and personalities from all over are represented.

As with all of the books in the series, the book is divided into various subjects, focusing alternately as subject areas as politics, entertainment, transportation, science, celebrities, and other subjects.

I love these books and strongly recommend them to anyone interested in . . . well, interested in just about anything. Each volume allows us to peek back at decades of our past, each functions as a time capsule.

Though this book has a lot of pictures from England, etc., it definitely includes the U.S., Russia, and other European countries. I believe these books are a fun and informative slice of history for those of us who weren't there. They are definitely worth more than they cost.

2 out of 5 stars ENGLAND in the 1950's   February 26, 2001

Something I didn't see mentioned before buying this book is that it's about ENGLAND in the 1950's. If that's what you're looking for, I'd give it four stars. But since that's not mentioned anywhere I only give it two.
